In every business, there are opportunities to pivot and change and with that comes the ripple effect. While I have chosen to no longer offer these salves and balms within my store, I offer you my recipes. That way you can continue to enjoy them by creating your own herbal magic within your home. You will be able to find almost all of the botanical herbs within my online store, but will need to source your own essential oils, carrier oils and beeswax to make your own!
My preferred method of making the infused oils for the salves/balms was the Solar Method. This method is slow and I usually let my infused oils sit in a nice, sunny window for 1-2 moon cycles. You may choose to use a quicker method like the slow cooker method, double boiler method or even the alcohol intermediary method. I also preferred to use dried plant matter, as fresh plants have a high water content which can cause your oil to mould if you’re not careful. The amount of carrier oil needed will depend on the amount of herb used. Once my herbs are in the jar, I fill until the oil completely covers the herb by about 1/4”. Sometimes the herbs used are light and fluffy, so they may tend to float near the top. Aim for that 1/4” between what is floating near the top and the rest at the bottom. Give your jar a good shake once you’ve added your oil and let it settle. Take a look and see if all your herbs are covered and add more carrier oil if needed. Now, you let it sit, infuse and give it a shake every once and a while.
After your 1-2 moon cycles, it is ready to strain. You can strain through cheesecloth or a nutmilk bag into a clean bowl/jar. From here you will use the double-boiler method to heat your infused oil, so that you can melt in your beeswax. Again, the amount of beeswax needed will depend on how hard you want your salve to be. Start small and test randomly, by putting a drop onto a spoon and letting it harden to see how soft/hard it becomes before adding more. Once you’ve reached your desired hardness, you can add your essential oils (recipe dependent), stir and then pour into your salve containers.
