Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi)

Taste: Mildy Pungent, Astringent, Mild Bitterness

Energetics: Cooling, Drying, Stimulating Tonic

Preparations: Infusion (up to 12g of herb), Tincture, Topical Wash

Contraindications: not suited for long-term use, not to be used to pregnancy or breastfeeding, not to be used in children under the age of 12, can interfere with colorimetric urine tests as it may turn urine greenish-brown. Use may lead to retinal thinning as this herb contains hydroquinone which inhibits melanin synthesis. Should be avoided in those with kidney disease. Doses greater than 15 grams can be toxic.

Herb-Drug Interaction: caution to those taking lithium as the herb may reduce it’s excretion, causing an increase in levels due to diuretic effects. Uva-Ursi should be avoided while taking medications known to acidify the urine.
